I unearthed the Christmas music from my ipod today and just heard this lyric:

"Well, let's go, time isn't here for wasting;
life is a full of sweet sweet things, I'd like to do some tasting."

It strikes me that there are so many sides to that phrase that I hardly know where to begin. There's the immediate jump to the exotic- city jumping, indulgences and top 100 lists. But there's also the satisfaction of a new friend, an old one, a job well done, a milestone met. There's the celebration upon completion and the initial acceptance of the challenge. There's the excitement of listening to a new song, but also the familiar feel of an old one that still manages to hit new notes within you. There's walking outside in the morning, breathing in fresh air and just knowing that you're alive. There's the gigantic bear hugs when you haven't seen someone in months or years, and then the little daily touches that say "I love you and I'm glad you're here." There's the bitterness of missing someone and the joy of getting them back or the pain of losing them forever. There's the sight of the first snow, the first crocus in the spring, sunflowers under a blue sky, and colorful fall leaves dancing in the breeze. There's the way your breath catches when you see something beautiful. There's the pleasure that comes from giving, from sharing something that gives you pleasure, from taking part in someone else's happiness. There's a million and one things to taste in this world, some sweet and some not. Even if you spent your entire life tasting there's still no way you could get to everything.

I feel like there ought to be a serious and insightful sentence at the end there that will tie everything together and leave off on a profound note, but I appear to have lost the words. I'm off now to take a taste at my paper and experience the pleasure of a new CD. Tell me, what are you tasting at the moment?
