I am not so emotionally intertwined with this animal to send flowers or sympathy cards, as I'm sure thousands of others will. But I will say this: I called his Derby win. I watched the day his leg broke. I followed his progress long past the time that the flowers and treats of well-wishers disappeared. I had hoped for a different ending. Perhaps all I can say is that now he is past all constraints and limitations our world can impose upon him. It is hard to find any competition that does not push participants to their utmost and further, that applauds pushing harder and harder, just to see where the edge is, individually and collectively. Humans can make the choice to push, animals cannot. As much as I love watching the Triple Crown races each year, I agree with Mr. Forde that it is time for change. We can either change the races to meet today's horses or change the horses so they can stand up to the races. I vote for changing the horses and banning all drugs in racing, save for medicinal purposes.
