It's been a long time since I've been disappointed with a book I've read. I don't have the time to read anywhere near as much as I would like to, but I guess I've just been lucky in what I've chosen of late. The book recieving this particular honor is Rebekah, by Orson Scott Card.

Anyone who knows me personally will know that I love Card's writing. The Ender Quartet was a catalyst for a lot of my current spiritual thinking when I read it back in 8th grade. I've read those books so many times that the pages are falling out. Hence my decision to buy newer copies for some of my friends for christmas last year rather than lending out the ones I had. I came upon Rebekah soon after reading The DaVinci Code and figured "Why not?"

Cut for those who haven't read the Book of Genesis )

I think in the end what doomed Rebekah for me was the similarities to a series of conversations I had with a whateverthehellhewas around this time last year. He was dead certain that if he could get me alone with a Bible for a couple of hours he could make me see the light. Every question I asked was answered with something that eventually came back to "Because God said so". And that's what Rebekah eventually comes down to. A very well written account of a life that can be summed up with a "Because God said so".
